Canteens vs. Dives

Appearing in the February 19, 1913 edition of Puck, this cartoon implores readers to realize"in the name of decency and common sense" that canteens with beer and soda make for a better recreational environment for servicemen than shady dive bars offering wood alcohol and prostitutes. While this illustration primarily takes aim at the temperance movement, it also reveals the broader societal concern with keeping soldiers away from worse forms of vice like prostitution. Such attitudes placed pressure on Waco's civic leaders to close the Reservation so that the city might be awarded a military base.
