Local and state associations officially recognized Bertrand for his talent in the food industry multiple times. In 1954, he was named the top restaurateur of Central Texas and went on to compete for the state title. Sponsored by the Texas Restaurant Association and its ten local chapters, the competition was judged using seven characteristics: ability; leadership; prestige; successful operation; contribution to the café industry; active participation in church, civic, and community affairs; and character and popularity within the industry.
