Muñiz’s candidacy represented a watershed moment in Mexican American politics. Many older members of the Mexican American community were reticent to break with the Democratic Party establishment, and considered the Chicano movement and its Raza Unida Party to be unnecessarily radical. Many of the younger generation, however, insisted that racial and cultural solidarity were necessary to obtain sufficient political power, cultural respect, and economic equality.
