Despite her upbringing, it took Eddie a few years to solidify her political and religious ideas. When she went off to college, she decided to become a Republican and to convert to Catholicism. Though both decisions shocked her family, neither change lasted in the long run. Eddie returned to the Baptist faith when she married Lacy Kirk Johnson in the mid-1950s and once again embraced the Democratic party when John F. Kennedy became president in 1963.
