The Owens-Illinois scholarship was negotiated with Baylor President W. R. White. Baylor tuition for a student in 1956 was $1,800, and the university received a grant from Owens-Illinois for that amount. The purpose of the scholarship was to “solve [the] nationwide shortage of personnel with scientific training and professional competence that industry needs and world conditions demand.”
