The first clothes dryer—a hand-wrung device—was invented in France in the early nineteenth century. A century later, however, American J. Ross Moore invented the first electric clothes dryer, after which time American companies began to develop and sell their own versions of the appliance. As shown here, the Hammond clothes dryer proudly bore its place of manufacture, “Waco, Texas.”
