Richards possessed a close relationship with her father, Cecil Willis. A man with only an eighth-grade education, he worked his way up in a pharmaceutical company. Eventually, he saved enough money to move his family into Waco from Lacy Lakeview so that Ann could attend a better high school. Out of admiration for her father, Ann named her oldest daughter Cecile.
