What's in a Name

The spelling of the store name appears in several versions on the building and in print. This was common in public and private sources and even varied between the owners, Juan and Lilia Cruz.  Additionally, the spelling differed visually and vocally. ‘Cruz’s’ was the visual spelling, however, when answering the telephone, “Cruz Drive In(n)” was the response, dropping the ’s for ease of vocal transition. In some cases, the name of the store is also listed as Cruz Grocery, Cruz Grocery and Market, and even Cruz Drive Inn Grocery.
