This photograph serves as a reminder of the uneasy tension that existed in the cotton industry between its prosperous present and its past rooted in slave holding. The proud bearing of the elderly women on the float and the two Confederate flags seem to speak to the glories of the old South. At the same time, the presence of these flags in addition to a black maid and driver suggests a casual acceptance of racial inequality in Southern cotton culture.
